Dial indicators, comparators, and lever-type test indicators from ULTRA, Sylvac, and Käfer form the foundation for highly accurate comparison, runout, and flatness measurements in industrial dimensional metrology. Unlike direct-measuring instruments such as calipers, these devices operate on the comparator principle to reliably capture deviations within the micrometer range relative to a pre-set reference point.
Analog dial indicators utilize a mechanical gear train to translate the linear displacement of the plunge stylus into a circular pointer movement. For particularly critical tolerance inspections, dial comparators are used, which feature a specialized lever-gear mechanism providing extreme magnification with minimal hysteresis. Lever-type test indicators utilize a lever system with a swiveling contact point, making them exceptionally suited for tactile probing in hard-to-reach areas or internal bores.
